A side note, after the fact. I wrote this novel in 2007-8, when I knew no more of Donald Trump than that he was a rich businessman who had made the news for his celebrated and disastrous marriages. Had I imagined at the time what he would become, I never would have chosen him to appear (albeit briefly) in this novel. His rise to power is one fortune I would not have predicted, nor, I dare say, would the cookies.
